The Yukon's Peel River Watershed is one of the largest and most beautiful intact wilderness areas left in North America. Industrial development threatens to fragment this stunning landscape and harm its delicate ecological balance. Sprawling over 68,000 square kilometres, the Peel is the northern anchor of the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative.

Protect Alberta's Castle Wilderness

Between Northern Montana and Southern Canada is the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. At the top of Waterton is the Castle: a natural wilderness corridor under imminent threat. The Alberta government has scheduled the Castle for clear-cut logging beginning June 2011. Together with the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative and CPAWS, The Big Wild is asking Canadians to take quick action and protect this majectic ecosystem and grizzly home.

A New Campaign to Protect Ontario's Caribou

At the end of January 2011, Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources announced plans to exempt all industries from the Endangered Species Act (ESA) for most of the caribou habitat in Ontario. This proposal, when enacted, would effectively remove all legal protections under the ESA for caribou. The Ministry is jeopardizing the recovery of caribou in Ontario and failing to uphold its North American-leading Endangered Species Act.

The Alberta government has recommended 22% of this wilderness be designated a conservation area but not necessarily protected from industrial development. Protect the Flathead River Valley

In a remarkable move, the BC Government has banned mining from the region. Now we're asking leaders to establish permanent protection for the Flathead River Valley. In November, 2011 British Columbia's provincial government awarded the "Flathead Watershed Conservation Act" the Royal Assent. According to the new law, coal mining and methane gas extraction is forbidden in the Flathead River Valley. Now we're just two steps away from total protection of the Flathead River Valley.

Nahanni: Protected Forever!

One of Canada's most spectacular Boreal wilderness sites, a top 10 world paddling destination and home to a waterfall twice as high as Niagara, is now protected from industrial development FOREVER! The recently expanded Nahanni National Park Reserve and World Heritage Site now protects over 30 000 square km along the Northwest Territories' South Nahanni River, making it Canada's third-largest National Park.
